Signol’s six-month trial with Cargill shows significant opportunity for fuel-saving

The trial focused on improving three operational actions with the potential to save fuel: engine maintenance, efficient use of auxiliary engines, and efficient use of the main engine.

A six-month fuel efficiency trial run by Signol for ship charterer Cargill has successfully demonstrated the opportunity for significant emissions reductions with Signol’s behaviour change service.

The trial engaged captains and crew on the selected vessels with personalised goals and targeted communications to support them in making fuel-saving decisions more often.

Harriet Hunnisett Johnson, Signol’s Head of Maritime, said: “The collaboration between Signol and Cargill has been very fruitful and generated important insights about the significant opportunity for behavioural science to add potential value to Cargill’s fuel efficiency programme.

“Both Signol and Cargill share a commitment to making as much headway as possible with decarbonisation by using all the resources available today to reduce fuel consumption, which includes effectively harnessing crew behaviour alongside using data insights and new technologies.”

The trial covered three operational actions with the potential to save fuel: engine maintenance, efficient use of auxiliary engines, and efficient use of the main engine.

Shipping experts at Signol are also exploring new opportunities for behaviour-led fuel-saving on Cargill’s vessels, using insights from the trial alongside ongoing research.

Last year, Signol signed the Global Maritime Forum’s operational efficiency ambition statement, alongside Cargill and other shipping companies, committing to strategies that can decrease annual fuel consumption by 20%, reduce annual emissions by more than 200 million tonnes of CO2, and enable the uptake zero-emission fuels in the long run.

Signol’s science-backed techniques have the potential to enhance the value and efficacy of existing optimisation solutions adopted on vessels by ensuring that day-to-day actions taken by crew members consistently follow optimisation suggestions.
